The podcast links to Freya Alexander's Blog. Podcasts are audio files, uploaded to the internet. The word Podcast is a portmanteau of the two words ipod and broadcasting. Simply listening to a podcast follows a pedagogy of "transfer" for learning. However, creating a podcast in the classroom becomes a powerful tool of engagement. When students are the authors of their own podcasts and when the pedagogy supports an active producer or maker orientation an active learning environment is created. Freya Alexander and I created a podcast called ‘Teachers Talking Tech’ that demonstrated this construct. In this podcast, we discuss the SAMR framework and in creating the podcast, Freya and I had to research information about the subject matter, write a script, work out how to use the voice recording equipment, negotiate our roles, select and agree on a soundtrack and deliver a presentation that was suitable for our target audience. This was an exemplary social constructivist classroom experience. Not only did we learn about the SAMR model, we were active in moving from the substitution level of simply researching the topic online, to “Redefining” a classroom experience, as described in the SAMR mode. The ultimate goal is for educators to redefine how they teach and how students learn, as well as enabling students to accomplish tasks that they couldn’t do before using the new technology. A useful way of engaging with the SAMR model is to ask; “how are we currently using technology?” and "where do we want to go with it?". To fully engage in this process, educators need to know enough about the technology to show students its full potential. As technology is rapidly evolving, teachers are compelled to undertake continual professional development, in order to give students an education that fully integrates technology into the classroom.
